One editor explores the lack of visibility in the industry and shares the best places to shop for size-inclusive ski wear.
I'm not sure if it's the winter sun or white snow, but there's something truly magical about skiing. So, when the opportunity arose for me to head to The Alps, I jumped at the idea. Finally, it was time to have my picture-perfect après moment... until it dawned on me, 'where the hell will I get stylish ski wear?'
Unlike my fashionable friends, the opportunity to adorn my voluptuous body in a Chanel jumpsuit - like my friend Melissa (from Melissa's Wardrobe) - or go full Fendi on them, seemed far-fetched. One; because my bank balance might not have appreciated a designer shopping spree. But two, the variety of fashionable ski-appropriate outfits in size fat/curve/plus-size (feel free to pick your preferred adjective) seemed amiss.
But with every fashion dilemma is a challenge I'll greatly take on. And so the hunt began. While it might not be a monochromatic designer look, I found some chic and affordable pieces from brands like ASOS Curve and Ulla Popken that I'm going to share so that you, too, can feel fly AF on the slopes. All you'll have to worry about is your friends get the perfect angles for the 'gram.
Skiers regularly wear salopettes, which can make for an incredible fashion moment when styled correctly. So, I wanted to find some that would work for my curves but weren't boring or basic. Unsurprisingly, brands offer an array of prints, colours and styles in their core range but seriously neglect the same effort for their curve range. This means that trying to find salopettes available beyond a size 22 was borderline impossible. While this experience isn't new, it is saddening. Thankfully, after trawling through the internet, I found four salopettes worth sharing. They may not be the most super trend-driven, but they certainly warrant a mini photoshoot on the slopes.

Unlike salopettes, snowsuits are much easier to come by with brands like Missguided offering great styles in sizes 18 to 26 and Dolls Kill, which goes up to an XXL. Unfortunately, this still leaves those over a size 26 excluded, but it is still a vast 'improvement' in comparison to salopettes.

In my hours spent looking for ski wear, I came across a plus-size fashion brand called Ulla Popken and discovered that they offered an array of ski outfits. Unlike many other brands, Ulla Popken offers a multitude of colours, prints and styles - and within that collection, a great choice of ski trousers. In fact, their offering is so great I had to include some of their styles here.

While, I'd like to say 'mission complete', looking for plus-size friendly ski wear still left me feeling a little disheartened. It's mind-boggling that the industry hasn't widely recognised the existence of plus-size people - hello, we are here, living and thriving! - and it's even more frustrating that these moments often leave us feeling isolated. An experience that's supposed to be fun is then made into a 'challenge' because the appropriate clothing isn't readily available. But does that mean we shouldn't get to enjoy a getaway as much as our friends? Definitely not.
And there's reassurance in knowing that there are hundreds of plus-size babes sharing their ski moments over on Instagram under the hashtag #plussizeski. So let's continue to celebrate each other and push for more size inclusivity - because we all deserve to feel fabulous, whether we're at the local lido, running errands around town or carving up the slopes like a total boss.
